Privacy Policy

Pinch Split ("we," "our," or "us") respects your privacy and is committed to protecting your personal data. This privacy policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application and website at pinchsplit.com.

See also our Terms of Service.

Information We Collect

Account Information

When you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive:

  • Your name (as provided by the sign-in provider)
  • Your email address
  • A unique account identifier

Receipt Data

  • Receipt images you choose to scan within the app
  • Extracted receipt data (merchant name, items, prices, tax, tip, totals)
  • Item assignments and split calculations

Group Information

  • Group names and member information you create
  • Expense history and settlement records

Information Collected Automatically

  • Device information (device type, operating system, unique device identifiers)
  • Usage data (features used, interaction patterns)
  • Crash reports and error logs

Information We Do Not Collect

  • We do not access your camera roll or photos without explicit permission
  • We do not collect precise location data
  • We do not access your device contacts without your consent
  • We do not store your payment credentials (handled by third-party payment processors)

How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Create and manage your Pinch Split account
  • Process receipt images to extract item and pricing information
  • Store your receipt history so you can access past splits
  • Calculate and display fair bill splits
  • Facilitate payment requests between users
  • Send you service-related notifications
  • Improve and optimize the app experience
  • Respond to your requests and support inquiries
  • Detect and prevent fraud or abuse

Receipt Processing

Receipt scanning is built so your image is used for one job: extracting items, prices, and totals so your group can split the bill. When you scan a receipt:

  • We send the image to OpenAI and/or Google Gemini (via OpenRouter) for AI-powered extraction and parsing
  • Extracted data (items, prices, totals) is saved to your account on our servers
  • Receipt images are stored in your account until you delete them
  • You can delete individual receipts or all receipt data anytime in the app

We use these providers' APIs — not consumer chat products — and choose them because their published policies state that API inputs are not used to train their models. Full policy links are in Third-Party Services below so you can verify this yourself.

Subscriptions and Launch Offer

During our launch period, the first 1,000 users who sign up may receive access to all Pro features at no charge. If you subscribe to a paid plan after launch, payment information is processed by Apple or other authorized payment providers — we do not store your full payment card details.

Subscription and purchase data (such as plan type and renewal status) may be stored to manage your account access. See our Terms of Service for billing and cancellation details.

Third-Party Services

We partner with established services to run Pinch Split. For AI receipt parsing, we use API access under each provider's published data policies — so you can see exactly how your data is handled.

Supabase

Cloud database and authentication. Stores your account data, receipts, and expense history.

OpenAI

AI models for receipt extraction and parsing. OpenAI's API policy states that API data is not used to train their models by default. OpenAI data controls

OpenRouter

Secure routing layer we use to reach Google Gemini. OpenRouter's policy states it does not train on your prompts or responses, and does not retain prompt content unless logging is opted in by the developer. OpenRouter Privacy Policy

Google (Gemini)

Gemini models for receipt extraction (via OpenRouter) — separate from Google Sign-In. Google's Gemini API terms for paid services state that prompts and responses are not used to improve Google's products. Gemini API Terms

Apple / Google Sign-In

Authentication providers. We only receive your name and email; we never see your Apple ID or Google password.

Stripe (coming soon)

Payment processing for premium features. Stripe handles all payment information directly; we never see or store your card details.

How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information.

With Other Users

When you split a bill, other group members can see your name and the items assigned to you. They cannot see your full account details, email address, or payment information.

With Service Providers

We share data with the third-party services listed above solely to provide app functionality. These providers are contractually obligated to protect your data.

For Legal Reasons

We may disclose your information if required by law, court order, or government request, or to protect our rights, privacy, safety, or property.

Data Retention

  • Account data: Retained while your account is active
  • Receipt images and data: Stored indefinitely until you delete them
  • Expense history: Retained while your account is active
  • After account deletion: All data is permanently deleted within 30 days

Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your data:

  • All data is encrypted in transit using TLS/SSL
  • Data at rest is encrypted on our servers
  • Authentication is handled securely via Apple/Google Sign-In
  • We use Supabase Row Level Security to ensure users can only access their own data

However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Your Rights and Choices

You have the right to:

  • Access your personal data through the app
  • Delete individual receipts or your entire account
  • Export your data in a portable format
  • Opt out of marketing communications
  • Revoke camera or photo library permissions at any time

To exercise these rights, use the settings within the app or contact us at privacy@pinchsplit.com.
