Fair Fare ("we," "our," or "us") respects your privacy and is committed to protecting your personal data. This privacy policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application.

Information We Collect

Account Information

When you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive:

  • Your name (as provided by the sign-in provider)
  • Your email address
  • A unique account identifier

Receipt Data

  • Receipt images you choose to scan within the app
  • Extracted receipt data (merchant name, items, prices, tax, tip, totals)
  • Item assignments and split calculations

Voice Data

  • Voice recordings when you use voice allocation features
  • Transcribed text from voice recordings

Group Information

  • Group names and member information you create
  • Expense history and settlement records

Information Collected Automatically

  • Device information (device type, operating system, unique device identifiers)
  • Usage data (features used, interaction patterns)
  • Crash reports and error logs

Information We Do Not Collect

  • We do not access your camera roll or photos without explicit permission
  • We do not collect precise location data
  • We do not access your device contacts without your consent
  • We do not store your payment credentials (handled by third-party payment processors)

How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Create and manage your Fair Fare account
  • Process receipt images to extract item and pricing information
  • Process voice recordings to allocate expenses to group members
  • Store your receipt history so you can access past splits
  • Calculate and display fair bill splits
  • Facilitate payment requests between users
  • Send you service-related notifications
  • Improve and optimize the app experience
  • Respond to your requests and support inquiries
  • Detect and prevent fraud or abuse

Receipt and Voice Processing

Receipt Processing

When you scan a receipt:

  • The image is sent to OpenAI's LLM for text extraction and parsing
  • Extracted data (items, prices, totals) is stored in your account on our servers
  • Receipt images are stored indefinitely in your account until you choose to delete them
  • You can delete individual receipts or all receipt data at any time from the app

Voice Processing

When you use voice allocation:

  • Your voice recording is sent to OpenAI's LLM for transcription
  • The transcribed text is used to assign items to group members
  • Voice recordings are deleted immediately after transcription is complete
  • Only the resulting item assignments are stored, not the audio

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services to operate Fair Fare:

Supabase

Cloud database and authentication. Stores your account data, receipts, and expense history.

OpenAI

Provides the LLM used to process receipt images (OCR/parsing) and voice recordings (transcription). Data is processed according to OpenAI's API data usage policies and is not used to train their models.

Apple / Google Sign-In

Authentication providers. We only receive your name and email; we never see your Apple ID or Google password.

Stripe (coming soon)

Payment processing for premium features. Stripe handles all payment information directly; we never see or store your card details.

How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information.

With Other Users

When you split a bill, other group members can see your name and the items assigned to you. They cannot see your full account details, email address, or payment information.

With Service Providers

We share data with the third-party services listed above solely to provide app functionality. These providers are contractually obligated to protect your data.

For Legal Reasons

We may disclose your information if required by law, court order, or government request, or to protect our rights, privacy, safety, or property.

Data Retention

  • Account data: Retained while your account is active
  • Receipt images and data: Stored indefinitely until you delete them
  • Voice recordings: Deleted immediately after transcription
  • Expense history: Retained while your account is active
  • After account deletion: All data is permanently deleted within 30 days

Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your data:

  • All data is encrypted in transit using TLS/SSL
  • Data at rest is encrypted on our servers
  • Authentication is handled securely via Apple/Google Sign-In
  • We use Supabase Row Level Security to ensure users can only access their own data

However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Your Rights and Choices

You have the right to:

  • Access your personal data through the app
  • Delete individual receipts or your entire account
  • Export your data in a portable format
  • Opt out of marketing communications
  • Revoke camera or microphone permissions at any time

Children's Privacy

Fair Fare is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn we have collected information from a child under 13, we will delete it promptly. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, please contact us immediately.

International Data Transfers

Your information may be transferred to and processed in the United States and other countries where our service providers operate. These countries may have different data protection laws than your country of residence. By using Fair Fare, you consent to the transfer of your information to these countries. We ensure appropriate safeguards are in place in compliance with applicable laws.

California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

California residents have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act:

  • Right to know what personal information is collected
  • Right to delete personal information
  • Right to opt-out of the sale of personal information (we do not sell your data)
  • Right to non-discrimination for exercising your privacy rights

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the new policy in the app and updating the "Last updated" date. Your continued use of Fair Fare after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
